Why Do Some People Lose Weight Faster Than Others on GLP-1 Medications?

Hi, this is Dr. John Molina, one of the Medical Directors at AIM Weight Loss Medical Centers.

One of the most common questions we hear is, “Why is my friend losing weight so much faster than I am?”

The answer is actually quite simple: every body is different.

Just as some people respond better to certain blood pressure medications, antibiotics, or pain medicines, people also respond differently to GLP-1 medications. Genetics, metabolism, hormone balance, and your body’s unique biology all play a role in determining how quickly you see results.

One reason may be how your liver processes medications. Each person’s metabolism is unique, meaning some people maintain higher or more effective medication levels than others. Another factor is how GLP-1 medications interact with their target receptors. These medications work by attaching to specific receptors throughout the body, helping regulate appetite, blood sugar, and feelings of fullness. In some individuals, those receptors may respond more quickly, while in others, it may take longer for the medication to trigger the cellular changes that lead to weight loss. Receptor density—the number of available receptors—may also vary from person to person, potentially influencing how strongly someone responds.

The good news is that a slower start doesn’t mean the medication isn’t working. Many patients who lose weight gradually end up achieving outstanding long-term results. Healthy, sustainable weight loss is often more important than rapid weight loss.

At AIM Weight Loss Medical Centers, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every patient receives an individualized treatment plan based on their medical history, response to therapy, weight-loss goals, and overall health. If you’re not responding as expected, we don’t simply tell you to “keep waiting.” We work with you to evaluate your progress, adjust your treatment plan when appropriate, discuss nutrition and exercise strategies, and make sure you’re receiving the best possible care.

Our goal isn’t just to help you lose weight—it’s to help you lose weight safely, effectively, and in a way that’s sustainable for life.

Remember, your weight-loss journey is your journey. Comparing yourself to someone else can be discouraging because their biology isn’t the same as yours. Stay consistent, trust the process, and let your medical team guide you every step of the way.

At AIM, we’re committed to finding the approach that works best for you—because personalized medicine delivers personalized results.
